Formative Assessments

Formative Assessments are used FOR student learning, as opposed to, Summative Assessment which assess at the end of a unit or school year. Formative Assessments are on-going assessments, reviews and observations within the classroom to improve instructional methods and offer student feedback throughout the teaching and learning process. Parkway staff use a variety of formative assessments to guide instruction including:

  • weekly quizes
  • exit tickets
  • student journals
  • thumbs up, down and sideways
  • questioning strategies
  • observations
  • home/school connections
  • projects
